Artist Analysis: Kelly Bastow

Picture
For my Artist Analysis, I've chosen the very talented Kelly Bastow, who also goes under the name "moosekleenex" on DeviantArt.com (you can find her website here: http://moosekleenex.deviantart.com/). The title of this piece is called "Rubbish", and it was submitted July 13th, 2010 on DeviantArt.com. It is a pen and ink drawing, and is 334 KB in size. This is a picture of a girl who got tossed into a dump, with the city on the other side of the mountain of trash. She could be dead, or unconscious.
She accentuates the lines in the foreground by enveloping the black lines with white lines, which is not done as much with the buildings in the back. As this is a black and white drawing, she may be using this technique so her lines don't get lost in any black surroundings. There's a good sense of space because of the overlapping and contrast used throughout the piece.
The piece is well balanced, using the Rule of Thirds throughout. The emphasis is on the girl, because she is a giant contrast in the foreground.
One gets an eerie feeling looking at this picture, because the mood is morbid and dark. The girl is in a place she's not suppose to be, and she is unconscious. Does this make her dead? Who put her there? Why is she there? There are so many questions that could be asked about this picture. One possible story behind this picture could be that this woman was a victim of crime in the city, and the criminal threw her in the dump where no one would find her for a while. This picture is a narrative, and not realistic. Maybe the artist was trying to show her feelings of how women are targeted more than men for crimes.
I like the piece because it's aesthetically pleasing, and it has a haunting aura. I don't think this piece would be an important piece in art history, because it's not representing a major change in art or in culture (though it could be representing how badly women are treated, though women have always been treated badly.) Other people can learn how to draw a good story from looking at this picture. The title "Rubbish" makes sense to the piece because she is in a pile of rubbish.
