Photo Essay Subject: My Favorite Place

For my photo essay, I wanted to take pictures of the place I'll miss the most when I leave high school- the drawing room. I still remember the first time I was ever in the drawing room. I'm pretty sure I was a freshman, and I was only there briefly because I was waiting for my sister to give me a ride home, but I knew I then even in the 5 or 10 minutes I spent there, I knew that that room would become something very special to me in the next three years (since I planned on taking Drawing for the next three years, because that's what I like to do the most.) When I went to Drawing the next year, it looked very different than it had before. Year by year, the drawing room visibly changed, but never changed once in its soul. I never dreaded coming to drawing, ever. It was the one place in the school that remained a constant place of comfort to me, no matter who was in the class room. Until recently I had always assumed that it would be around forever so that I could visit it long after my graduation from high school. However, my town's getting a new school to replace this one, so this room could be gone forever.
Which is the purpose of this photo assignment- to preserve the place I love the most.
I printed these photos and put them in an accordion book, which is a piece of paper that folds up and can be read almost like a book. I arranged the photos almost as if it were the scenes a person saw when they walked into the room and looked around, (including outside.) I shrunk the photos down to 2"x about 1.3" so that the accordion book could be nice and small. It wasn't just because it was convenient for me at the time to mount 10 tiny little pictures on a tiny strip of paper, but I love really small things as I love the drawing room, so it's like a combination of things I like the most. I tried my best to include everything I've learned about in photography, like depth, linear perspective, texture, line, shape, and pattern. I've learned so much this year from the art department. I'm going to miss it a lot.
